The regulator said the aim of the campaign is to educate consumers about the difference between legal and illegal online gambling. Legal gambling sites must provide certain measures to protect players. The illegal gambling sites do not respect these rules.
In order to publicize which operators in Belgium are licensed, the Always Play Legally logo will be used by operators who have received written authorization from the Commission.
The regulator said that an estimated 20% of gambling customers in Belgium end up playing with unlicensed rather than licensed operators, who are not subject to regular checks by the commission.
The Gaming Commission regularly checks legal gambling sites.
These checks are done on a random basis as well as after tips or complaints. In the event of violations of the Gaming and Betting Act, the Gaming Commission can initiate a sanction procedure against a legal gambling site.
The dangers of playing with unlicensed operators are “enormous,” said the regulator, as the sites have no player protections and there is no guarantee that winnings will be paid out. When gambling online on illegal gambling sites you are not protected as a player.

In addition to using the Always Play Legally logo, the campaign will feature a number of video clips that provide answers to frequently asked questions from players about the difference between licensed and unlicensed operators, including the risks of playing with the latter.
The CJH said new clips will be released every week until the start of UEFA Euro 2021.
Last month, the regulator signed a Memorandum of Understanding with its Dutch counterpart, the Gaming Authority, in an agreement in which the two regulators will work closely together on, among other things, the protection of players and the fight against illegal gambling.
In February, Belgium passed a royal decree lowering the maximum number of online sports betting license holders allowed in the jurisdiction from 34 to 31.
