The Hell of the North
The Hell of the North is one of the most important cycling races of the year. Paris-Roubaix is one of the five monuments in the cycling year. In March the riders will drive from Milan to San Remo, the race is also called la primavera, and it is the longest pro race on the calendar. A few weeks later, the well-known Tour of Flanders follows. This race is of course sacred in beautiful Flanders and we don’t need to explain how important this race is. One week after Flanders, the riders will compete for the title in Paris Roubaix. This is followed by the hilltop classic Liège-Bastogne-Liège, and at the end of the year the course of the falling leaves Il Lombardia.
30 cobblestone strips
The differences in cycling are generally made in the mountains. But also in the spring on the Belgian and French roads, the peloton is driven to shreds. This happens on the cobblestones, in Belgium we are familiar with the pebbles, but in other places in the world the stones are less known. It is therefore not for nothing that the Belgians often excel in the spring. Paris-Roubaix starts relatively easy with a hundred kilometers in which the riders encounter relatively few obstacles. After that, however, newcomers find out why this match is also called the Hell of the North. The riders dock over about 30 cobblestone sections (depending on the edition), one section is even worse than the other.
The knockout race begins
Chaos is the first word we can think of when describing the race on the cobblestones. We see crashes, flat tires and riders who can’t keep up with the pace on the stones. It is a knockout race, who will be spared bad luck? Will it be quiet for a while, so people can still come back? With each cobblestone section you see the peloton getting smaller.
After the riders have had about 10 lanes, however, the race really starts for the strongest riders.
The heaviest strips
The Wallers-Arensberg forest is approaching, the riders are nervous, everyone wants to be in the front, because you don’t want to be behind a crash. Then the riders hit the cobblestones at 60 km per hour, 2.4 kilometers long and then make up the damage, who’s with them? Who’s off? Are we driving on? The sections follow each other in quick succession, yet it is a little while until the next dreaded section of Paris-Roubaix, Mons-en-Pévèle, three kilometers of badly laid cobblestones. This is where the race is often made, a decent chance that an elite group will drive away. After this it is on to the Carrefour de l’Arbre, the toughest section deep in the final of the race. If you are not confident in your sprint, this is your chance to make a further selection or even to drive away solo. After this it is on to the vélodrome André Pétrieux of Roubaix.
Paris-Roubaix is only won by champions
Small riders don’t win in Paris-Roubaix, you need a big bike and really only champions win. The winner list immediately shows how tough the competition is. The last Belgian victory was for Greg van Avermaet, he won Paris Roubaix in 2017. Van Avermaet won an exciting edition, he won the sprint of a group of five Zdenek Stybar and Sebastian Langeveld completed the podium. In 2018, Peter Sagan won, the Slovak soloed to Silvan Dillier from the early break and put Dillier on the track in Roubaix in the sprint.
