Matchday 3/07/2021: 18.00: Czech Republic vs Denmark

The Czech Republic surprisingly won against the Netherlands on Sunday. The match turned in favor of the Czechs after De Ligt got red after intentional handplay. Ukraine promoted from Group C as one of the best teams in third place thanks to a 2-1 lead over North Macedonia between small losses to the Netherlands and Austria. Manchester City utility player Oleksandr Zinchenko shot them up front against Sweden in the 27th minute, but Emil Forsberg equalized with a deflected try just before half time. In the second period, Serhiy Sydorchuk hit the woodwork for Ukraine before Forsberg fired shots at the outside of the post and the crossbar curled on the other side.

Sweden then sent Marcus Danielson off the field in extra time and substitute Artem Dovbyk’s last header proved decisive. Shevchenko stated: “Both teams played very well. It was an interesting match. Neither side wanted to lose, so at the end we got this drama.”

It’s hard to fault Ukraine’s effort, while West Ham’s Andriy Yarmolenko and Roman Yaremchuk from Ghent are well matched in attack.

England were only skillful at the top of the Group D table, beating Croatia and the Czech Republic 1-0 on either side of a scoreless stalemate with Scotland. Early exchanges with Germany were predictably tight, with Raheem Sterling testing Manuel Neuer from long distance and Jordan Pickford doing well to deny Timo Werner.

However, the introduction of Jack Grealish in the second half helped open things up and he fueled Luke Shaw to cross over to Sterling to break the deadlock.

Thomas Muller lost a big chance to equalize, but there was no return for Germany after Harry Kane nodded to Grealish’s cross.
