Gambling prohibited for persons under 21 years of age
Earlier this year, parliament approved a new and stricter gambling law, with the aim of better protecting consumers of gambling. One of the most important changes is the increase in the minimum age for all gambling from 18 to 21 years, effective 1 September 2024.
At the moment, this age limit already applies to gaming arcades, land-based and online casinos. However, in a few months, the measure will also apply to betting, online bookmakers, betting shops, newsagents that offer gambling, bingos and gambling machines in cafés.
Together for Better Protection
The KSC concludes its message with the hashtag #togetherforabetterprotection, with which the Belgian gambling regulator draws attention to campaigns and upcoming changes.
In addition, they want to use this message to strengthen their position and point out existing measures to providers. For example, the regulator recently had to warn in a news report that paid advertising on social media is not allowed, regardless of the content. Despite this ban, many casinos continued to place advertisements, especially in connection with the recent European Championship.
Concerns in the Gambling Industry
The new measures are causing unrest among private gambling providers, including the Belgian Association of Gaming Operators (BAGO). Together with the stricter advertising ban, the tightening of the ban on gifts and other measures, many operators fear that players will switch to illegal gambling sites, where responsible gaming is not taken into account.
Lotteries Excluded
It is striking that the new age limit does not apply to the lotteries of the National Lottery. Young people aged 18 and over are still allowed to participate in Lotto and EuroMillions, which causes frustration among many. This exception has led to indignant reactions, especially under a LinkedIn post by the Gaming Commission (KSC).
